Police Forced To Stop A Self-Accelerating Toyota (Video)
San Diego police were forced to box in a Toyota Prius that had a mind of its own.
Taking place at 2pm on Monday afternoon, a blue Toyoto Prius driven by James Sikes was accelerating east-bound on the 8 freeway reaching speeds of over 90mph. The driver called 911 and then dropped the phone while attempting to control the vehicle. A California Highway Patrol officer caught up with Sikes and using his loudspeaker, instructed him on how to utilize the parking break and normal brake to get the vehicle under control. After traveling over 30 miles, they were able to stop the vehicle up a steep upgrade.
“I was on the brakes pretty healthy,” Sikes recounts. “It wasn’t stopping, it wasn’t doing anything to it, and just kept speeding up, kept going, and I called 911 right away, and they were trying to tell me what to do, but I couldn’t hold the phone and the steering wheel properly at the same time, so I just kept trying my methods, dropped the phone and it just kept going faster. I just stayed on the brakes as much as I could until finally they started smelling really bad and I had metal sounds coming in the car.”
Sikes had previously been informed by Toyota of El Cajon that his vehicle was not one included in the recall.
No one was injured during these events and Toyota has dispatched a team of investigators to attempt to figure out what went wrong.
